Netizens Slam Hip Hop Star For Gatekeeping Fashion

Joe Flizzow, Malaysia’s prominent hip hop figure, has an important PSA for those who are wearing baju melayu this festive season.
“Please don’t pair your outfit with sneakers if you’re 21 and above. If you’re wearing a full set of baju melayu complete with the songkok and samping, please wear proper footwear like shoes and capal.”
He stressed that adults should not be wearing sneakers like Yeezys and Jordans because it is not appropriate. Joe even said that if he sees adults wearing sneakers with baju melayu, he would attack them.
Netizens had mixed opinions about his statement. Some agreed that baju melayu should be paired with proper footwear.
Many were unhappy with Joe’s statement of violence. They called him out on his double standards as he is a hip hop icon who dresses the part all the time.
Many women agreed that sneakers are more comfortable and stylish when paired with baju kurung.
On the other hand, there are those who say that pairing proper footwear with baju melayu is about respecting culture and tradition.
And there are those who say fashion is subjective. People can wear whatever they want to create the image that they were going for.
Fashion is subjective. What looks good on one person does not necessarily look good on others. For some people, comfort matters more than looks. If pairing sneakers with traditional clothes works, then why not.
Reporter’s Opinions: I gotta admit, I am with Joe on this one. Sneakers with women’s baju kurung are more forgivable than men’s baju melayu sets.
Hear me out. Some sneakers look good with baju melayu and baju kurung. Sneakers like Vans, Converse, Air Jordans and Stan Smiths work. But others like Yeezys, Balenciaga and regular Jordans can look ugly when paired with traditional wear.
But then again, fashion is subjective. If you think you look good in them, by all means, wear it. I mean I wear combat boots and platforms with my traditional clothes so who am I to stop people from wearing what they like with their outfit?
