A Singapore-based TikTok content creator has drawn flak online after posting a video of herself travelling overseas to escape the haze, with some netizens accusing her of being insensitive towards those who cannot afford to leave the country.

The creator, known as justjazzle on TikTok, shared a video of herself at an airport, saying she was "escaping the haze". "Good luck to whoever is in Singapore, because I will not be here anymore, at least for the next six days, five nights," she said.

Although the original video was later taken down, other TikTok creators have since posted similar videos showing themselves leaving Singapore, citing the haze as the reason for their departure.

The trend has prompted several TikTok creators to weigh in on the controversy.

One of them, ninjabread_, criticised the original video as "tone-deaf", saying it appeared to mock people who were unable to travel overseas to escape the haze.

Another creator, fauziazzhar, criticised such content as "insensitive", saying it made light of the plight of people affected by the haze.

He added that many people in Indonesia were suffering from the effects of the haze and could not afford to travel overseas to escape it.

Following the backlash, the creator of the original video issued an apology in a separate post, acknowledging that her tone and delivery had come across as insensitive and offensive to some viewers.

She also apologised for the hurt and offence her remarks had caused.

The controversy comes amid one of Singapore's more significant haze episodes in recent years, with air quality reaching unhealthy levels for the first time since October 2023.
