Grab Autonomous Shuttle's Near-Miss With Child in Punggol Sparks Debate Over Road Safety

A video showing a Grab autonomous shuttle narrowly avoiding a child at a pedestrian crossing in Punggol has sparked mixed reactions online, with netizens divided over who was at fault.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 8.11am on 5 November along Punggol Field Walk.
Footage shared by SG Road Vigilante shows the driverless shuttle making a left turn as a young girl crosses the road while the pedestrian signal is green.
The vehicle appeared to slow down, avoiding a collision.

Grab began offering autonomous shuttle rides to the public in Punggol in April 2026, in partnership with WeRide. The service operates with safety operators on board under LTA oversight.
In September, Grab announced plans to expand its fleet from 10 to 50 vehicles, with ambitions to operate beyond Punggol.
