French prosecutors have launched an investigation into racist online abuse directed at French football captain Kylian Mbappé following France's World Cup victory over Paraguay.
The probe was opened after the French Football Federation filed a complaint over remarks made by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla on social media.
Amarilla allegedly posted racist comments targeting Mbappé's race and heritage after France's 1-0 win, referring to him as a "colonised Cameroonian" rather than French, and a "brute.
In response, Mbappé condemned the remarks, calling the senator "despicable" and "unworthy" of holding public office.
The comments also drew condemnation from French President Emmanuel Macron and the Paraguayan government, which distanced itself from Amarilla's statements.
However, Amarilla has demanded a public apology from Mbappé and threatened legal action, accusing him of committing "gender-based violence" through his remarks.
Amarilla said she had deleted the original post and regretted some of her comments, but accused Mbappé of insulting her and said she would consider legal action if he did not retract his remarks.
