PM Wong Encourages Singaporeans To Learn Malay, Prompting Mixed Reactions Online

Learning Malay and understanding its culture would be "valuable" for Singaporeans, while potentially opening up more opportunities in the region, PM Lawrence Wong said at the National Day Rally on 23 Aug 2026.

However, the announcement has sparked debate online, with some users arguing that English is sufficient for communication, while others, including some non-Malay users, said they would prefer to improve their proficiency in their own languages.

Speaking in Malay, Wong said Singapore's historical and cultural links with the region could help strengthen ties with neighbouring countries.

He highlighted the importance of Malay to Singapore's identity, noting that it is the country's national language, the language of the national anthem and is used for commands in the Singapore Armed Forces.

Wong cited halal food manufacturer Pondok Abang as an example of a local business that has expanded regionally while retaining its Malay culinary roots.

The business started as a hawker stall in 1990 and pivoted to manufacturing halal frozen food products in 2012. It has since expanded into Malaysia and Brunei, with plans to enter other neighbouring markets.

This is not the first time PM Wong has called for greater use and appreciation of the Malay language.

At the launch of Bulan Bahasa 2025, Wong said that although English is Singapore's working language, Singaporeans should continue taking pride in their respective cultures, languages and traditions.

He said the Government would continue supporting efforts to promote Malay language and culture.

He also shared that he had started taking Malay lessons after entering politics and had been studying the language more diligently since becoming Prime Minister.
