Gurkha Dashain Parade Draws Praise For Officers' Contributions

A video shared online of a Gurkha parade celebrating Dashain has drawn appreciation for the community's contributions to Singapore's security.
The clip was among posts circulating on Reddit on October 18.

Dashain is Nepal's biggest Hindu festival, celebrating the goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura and symbolising the triumph of good over evil.
Traditionally observed over 15 days in Nepal, it brings families together for prayers, feasts and the exchange of gifts and blessings.
A key tradition is the tika ceremony, in which elders place a mixture of rice, yoghurt and coloured powder on younger relatives' foreheads and offer blessings.
Visits to relatives, new clothes, kite flying and traditional swings also feature in the celebrations.
The festival has long held significance for Gurkha units, with celebrations incorporating music, ceremonies and cultural performances.
It provides an opportunity for those serving overseas to celebrate their heritage together.
Established in 1949, Singapore's Gurkha Contingent is part of the Singapore Police Force. Its officers help guard selected installations and provide security at major events.
